Fontenay-le-Comte lies in the south of the Vendée department, on the river that gives the department its name. It was once the capital of Bas-Poitou and flourished during the Renaissance, and its old quarter still has a dense, irregular layout of narrow streets on the slopes above the river.

The historic streets gather around the church and the older squares, while later neighbourhoods spread out along the main roads.
