Forbesganj lies in the Araria district of northeastern Bihar, a short distance from the border with Nepal. The town is named after Forbes, a British landholder of the colonial period. It grew as a trading centre for the farming communities of the surrounding plains and still serves much of the district as a market.
The land around it is part of the broad, low plain shaped by the Kosi and its tributaries, rivers known for shifting their courses. From above, the ground is almost perfectly flat and cut by shallow channels, ponds and field boundaries. Villages are scattered across it, and roads run into town from every direction.
