Forquilhinha Map Poster & Print
Forquilhinha lies in southern Santa Catarina, close to the city of Criciúma, on a flat river plain at the foot of the coastal hills. It was settled largely by families of German descent. Its centre is a compact, fairly regular pattern of streets, set apart from the farmland that begins almost as soon as the houses end.
The town is the birthplace of Zilda Arns, the paediatrician who founded the Pastoral da Criança. It is also the birthplace of her brother, Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, archbishop of São Paulo during the military dictatorship and a noted defender of human rights. Their family roots here are a point of local pride.
Around the built area, the map is dominated by irrigated rice fields laid out in regular strips, a characteristic landscape of this part of the state. A Forquilhinha map poster shows a compact grid set among these rectangles of cultivation. Rivers and roads lead away toward Criciúma and the coast.

Rice fields
Irrigated rice paddies surround the town in long, regular plots. They form a fine geometric pattern that fills much of the map beyond the streets.
River plain
Watercourses cross the flat plain around the town. Their curving lines contrast with the straight edges of the fields and the street grid.
