The Wurm valley
The small river bends through the municipality from south to north, and its green corridor gives the map a soft, looping line through the centre.

Geilenkirchen Map Poster & Print
Geilenkirchen lies in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, a few kilometres from the Dutch border in the Heinsberg district. On the map the town centre is a small, dense knot of streets beside the Wurm, a modest river whose meandering course runs through the whole municipality. Around the centre sit outlying villages, each with its own little cluster of roads, joined by country lanes across open fields.
The town is best known internationally for NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, home to the alliance's fleet of airborne early-warning aircraft. The base appears on any map of the area as a long straight runway and a broad fenced rectangle to the west of the town, a strikingly geometric shape in otherwise gentle, agricultural country near the border with the Netherlands.
A Geilenkirchen map poster shows these contrasts clearly. There is the curving river valley with the old town beside it, the scattered villages linked by thin roads, and the hard straight edge of the airfield. It is a quiet map, but the pieces fit together in a way that says a lot about life on this stretch of the border.

Airbase runway
The long runway and taxiways of the NATO air base form one of the most striking geometric shapes anywhere in the region.
Village constellation
Around the town centre, separate villages form small clusters of streets scattered across farmland, like a loose constellation around a brighter core.
