Gisenyi, officially part of Rubavu District, sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu in western Rwanda. The shoreline curves gently along the edge of town, lined with a long lakeside road, beaches and gardens, while the commercial centre climbs the slope behind it. To the west the town meets the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it runs directly into the city of Goma.
Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes, deep and calm, with steep green shores and many small islands further south. On clear days the volcanoes of the Virunga range, including Nyiragongo, are visible to the north. The lakeside road in Gisenyi, lined with tall trees and older villas, has long made the town a place for rest and weekend escapes.
