Groß-Umstadt is in southern Hesse, where the Odenwald hills meet the Rhine-Main plain. It is the centre of a small wine-growing area sometimes called the Odenwald wine island, and vineyards cover the slopes around the town. The historic centre has a Renaissance town hall and half-timbered houses around its market square.
On a map, the old town is a tight, rounded core of short, irregular lanes. Its outline still follows the course of former fortifications. Around it, newer districts spread out in looser patterns, and main roads cross the valley.
