Guadalajara de Buga, usually called Buga, sits on the eastern side of the Cauca Valley in western Colombia, where the flat valley floor meets the foothills of the Central Cordillera. From above, the historic centre is a regular colonial grid of blocks, and the small Guadalajara River runs through the town. Newer neighbourhoods extend outward, while the highway to the west connects Buga to the rest of the valley.
Buga is one of the oldest towns in the region, founded in the sixteenth century, and its historic centre is protected. It is best known as a pilgrimage destination: the Basilica of the Lord of Miracles draws large numbers of visitors each year and dominates the life of the old town.
