Two Ruhr lakes
Hengsteysee and Harkortsee turn the Ruhr into two broad bodies of water. Together they give the map a strong, balanced shape on either side of the town.

Herdecke Map Poster & Print
Herdecke lies on the Ruhr at the southern edge of the Ruhr area, where the river widens into two reservoirs, Hengsteysee and Harkortsee. On a map, those two lakes are the town's clearest shapes. They sit on either side of the centre like two open hands, and roads and houses climb the wooded hills of the valley sides around them.
The Herdecke railway viaduct, a long row of stone arches over the Ruhr, is the town's best-known structure and shows as a thin line across the water. Beside Hengsteysee stands the Koepchenwerk, a historic pumped-storage power station whose pipes run straight down the slope. Herdecke is also known for its community hospital, which is closely tied to the origins of the nearby University of Witten/Herdecke.
A Herdecke map poster reads almost like a landscape study. The reservoirs, the bend of the river and the tight curving streets in the hills leave plenty of open space, which is unusual for a town at the edge of such a dense industrial region.

Stone railway viaduct
The arched viaduct carries the railway across the Ruhr valley and shows as a crisp, straight crossing over the water near the old centre.
Valley-side streets
Residential streets follow the contours of the wooded slopes, forming loops and switchbacks that contrast with the flat water below.
