Kalocsa lies on the Great Hungarian Plain in Bács-Kiskun county, a short distance east of the Danube. The land around it is almost completely flat, so the town's layout reads clearly on the map: a historic centre with a broad main street and squares, surrounded by residential blocks that give way to fields, drainage channels and scattered farmsteads.
Kalocsa is one of Hungary's oldest episcopal seats, founded in the time of Saint Stephen, and it remains the seat of an archdiocese. The baroque cathedral and the archbishop's palace form the core of the old town, and their grounds appear as a larger open space among the streets. The town is also known for its paprika and for colourful Kalocsa folk embroidery.
