Kanhangad is in Kasaragod district, in the far north of Kerala. On the map, the coastline runs along the western edge in a long, gentle line. The town sits a little inland, along the main north–south highway and the railway. Around it, the street pattern is loose and green, with houses spread among coconut groves and small lanes linking scattered neighbourhoods.
Rivers and backwaters reach the coast nearby, and the landscape between the sea and the hills is a patchwork of water, palms and paddy land. A short distance to the south, Bekal Fort stands on a headland above the sea. It is one of the largest forts in Kerala and one of the best-known sights in the district.
