Karatau Map Poster & Print
Karatau lies in Zhambyl region in southern Kazakhstan, at the foot of the Karatau mountains, a long, low range extending north-west from the Tian Shan. The town was established in the mid-twentieth century to serve phosphorite mining in one of the largest deposits of its kind in the Soviet Union. From above it has the clear structure of a planned town: straight streets, rectangular blocks and wide open spaces.
The town's fortunes followed the mining industry, with growth in the Soviet decades and a harder period after the 1990s. Its setting remains striking: steppe on one side, the dry, folded ridges of the range rising behind. Mines and quarries lie in the surrounding country, and their access roads cross the slopes in long, deliberate lines.
A Karatau map poster shows the planners' logic plainly. Parallel streets and orderly blocks form the core, wider avenues divide the main districts, and roads lead out towards the mines and neighbouring settlements. The foothills and open steppe fill the margins, giving the composition a strong sense of scale and distance.

Karatau foothills
Behind the town, the ridges of the Karatau range rise from the steppe, and streets stop cleanly where the slopes begin.
Mine roads
Long roads run out from town towards the phosphorite workings, straight lines across open country that explain why the town was built here.
