Kartuzy is a town in Pomerania, west of Gdańsk, and the unofficial capital of Kashubia. It lies in the hilly, lake-filled landscape known as Kashubian Switzerland. From above, the town is framed by water: lakes lie close to the centre, and the streets follow the shorelines and the rolling ground between them.
The town takes its name from the Carthusian monks who founded a monastery here in the fourteenth century. Their church survives, with an unusual Baroque roof shaped like a coffin lid, meant as a reminder of mortality. The town is also home to the Kashubian Museum, dedicated to the region's distinct language and culture.
