Kernersville sits almost exactly between Winston-Salem and Greensboro in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad, a position that has shaped it since it began as a crossroads on the routes between them. On a map the historic centre is a small, fairly regular knot of streets around Main Street, from which newer neighbourhoods spread out in the looping cul-de-sac patterns typical of American suburbs.
Interstate 40 passes close to the town, and its interchanges read as bold curving shapes against the finer residential grain. Creeks, small lakes and wooded strips break up the development, so the town looks less like a grid and more like a series of neighbourhood pockets joined by winding collector roads. Business parks add larger, blocky footprints near the main routes.
The town takes its name from Joseph Kerner, who bought the crossroads property in the early nineteenth century. Its best-known building is Körner's Folly, an eccentric Victorian house completed in 1880 by a descendant, the designer Jule Körner, and known for rooms of widely varying sizes.
