Krujë is built on the steep slope of a mountain above central Albania's coastal plain, north of Tirana. On a map the relief shapes everything. Streets zigzag up the hillside in tight bends, the town stretches along the contours, and the flat, gridded farmland of the plain spreads out below towards the Adriatic. The castle sits on a rocky spur at the upper edge of the town.
Krujë is closely tied to Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero. In the fifteenth century he defended the castle through several Ottoman sieges. The castle now contains the Skanderbeg Museum and an ethnographic museum. Just below it, a restored old bazaar runs along a cobbled street lined with wooden-fronted shops, which is one of the town's most visited places.
