Kundgol is a town in Dharwad district, south-east of Hubballi, set on the broad black-soil plains that characterise this part of northern Karnataka. From above, its streets form a close-knit centre with lanes that bend and meet in small junctions, while main roads run out across the countryside toward neighbouring towns and villages.
The town is closely associated with Hindustani classical music. It was the home of Sawai Gandharva, the vocalist whose disciples included Gangubai Hangal and Bhimsen Joshi, and music gatherings are held here in his memory. That heritage gives an otherwise quiet agricultural town a name recognised well beyond the region.
