Lake Starnberg, known until the 1960s as the Würmsee, lies southwest of Munich. It is long and fairly regular, stretching north to south with gentle shores, and the town of Starnberg sits at its northern tip. The river Würm leaves the lake from the north, flowing toward the city.
The lake is closely tied to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who drowned here in 1886 near Berg on the eastern shore; a cross in the water marks the spot. Off the western shore lies the Roseninsel, the lake's only island, with a small royal villa and rose garden once used by Ludwig.
