Lerdo lies in the state of Durango, on the western edge of the Comarca Lagunera, the metropolitan area it shares with Gómez Palacio and Torreón. The city stands near the Nazas River in semi-arid country, with dry hills to the west. On the map it looks like the final, greener piece of a large urban region stretching east across two states.
The historic centre is laid out on a regular grid of blocks around a main square and church, typical of northern Mexican towns. Tree-lined streets and gardens are more common here than in the larger industrial neighbourhoods further east. Roads link Lerdo closely with Gómez Palacio, and the two cities now meet almost without a break.
Beyond the built-up area, irrigated fields and desert scrub alternate, depending on how much water reaches the land from the Nazas.
