The town has a compact centre with streets converging on the church and marketplace, surrounded by residential districts and business parks along the main roads. Wooded valleys and small streams cut through the surrounding countryside and shape the town's outer edges.
Just outside town rises the Mont des Alouettes, one of the highest points of the Vendée, where a row of windmills has long stood on the ridge.
