Lessines lies in the province of Hainaut, in the Wallonia region of Belgium, on the river Dendre. The river and its canalised course run through the town. The older streets gather close to the water, and the newer districts spread out over flat, farmed land. What stands out most from above are the quarries: deep, irregular pits where porphyry has been extracted for generations, a stone widely used in Belgian roads and paving.
The town is the birthplace of René Magritte, born here in 1898, and it keeps a strong link to his name. Lessines is also known for the Hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose, a medieval hospital founded in the thirteenth century. Its buildings and gardens by the Dendre have been preserved and now house a museum of hospital life and medicine.
