Loja lies in the west of Granada province, where the Genil river runs through a narrow gap between the mountains of the Sierra de Loja and the hills to the south. That gap has made it a crossing point for centuries. On a map, the town gathers on the slope above the river, with the valley floor spreading out below.
The oldest quarter climbs towards the Alcazaba, the Moorish fortress that once guarded the route between Granada and the west. Its streets are short, steep and irregular, the kind of lanes that wrap around a hill instead of crossing it. Lower down, newer streets follow the valley, and the A-92 motorway sweeps past on its way between Granada and Seville.
