Lorena lies in the Paraíba Valley in the east of São Paulo state, on the main corridor between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In the nineteenth century the valley was one of Brazil's most important coffee regions, and Lorena still has town houses and mansions from the families who grew wealthy from it.
On a map, the town is framed by two lines. The Paraíba do Sul River runs along one side, winding across its floodplain, while the Via Dutra highway runs along the valley and passes the town. Between them, the older centre is laid out in a regular grid around its squares and cathedral, and newer neighbourhoods have spread outward from it.
