Lugo lies in the province of Ravenna, on the flat plain of Romagna between Bologna and the Adriatic. The land is almost perfectly level, so the map is defined by long straight roads, drainage canals and field boundaries. The historic centre is a compact, roughly rectangular core, with newer districts spreading outward from it.
At the heart of town, the Rocca Estense, a castle of the Este period, faces the Pavaglione, a large square surrounded by porticoes and built for the local silk market. Together they make a large open space in the middle of the dense centre, one of the most recognisable features of any Lugo map poster.
Lugo is the home town of Francesco Baracca, the First World War fighter pilot whose prancing horse emblem was later adopted by Enzo Ferrari. The family of the composer Gioachino Rossini also came from Lugo, and he spent part of his childhood here. A monument to Baracca stands in the town centre.
