Maasmechelen lies in the east of Belgian Limburg, along the Meuse where the river forms the border with the Netherlands. The municipality combines older riverside villages with the planned districts built for the coal mining industry in the twentieth century. On the map, these garden cities stand out with their curving streets and regular housing patterns.
The Eisden mine was one of the largest in the Kempen coalfield before mining ended, and the town has since found new uses for its industrial heritage. To the west lies the Hoge Kempen National Park, with heath, forest and former quarries, while the Maasmechelen Village outlet centre draws visitors from across the region.
