Malaba lies in eastern Uganda, right on the border with Kenya, facing a Kenyan town of the same name across the line. It is one of the main crossings on the Northern Corridor. This transport route carries goods between the port of Mombasa and Uganda, and on to countries further inland.
The map is organised around movement. The highway comes in from the west and reaches the border post, and the railway line runs close by, crossing the frontier as part of the historic route from the coast. Long lines of trucks often wait along the road, and the town has grown alongside them.
