Castlefield basins
Canals meet beneath railway viaducts at the southwestern corner of the centre. The overlapping water, rail and street lines make this the most detailed corner of the print.

Manchester Map Poster & Print
Manchester's centre is small, but the map is layered. The River Irwell curves along its western edge and separates it from Salford, while the Medlock and the Irk run in partly hidden channels nearby. Across all of this runs a network of canals, with the Rochdale, the Ashton and the Bridgewater meeting around Castlefield. Railway viaducts cross over them on long brick arches.
That network is a record of the city's industrial role. Manchester is often described as the first industrial city, and the canal basins and warehouses of Castlefield and Ancoats were built to move cotton and coal. The Bridgewater Canal, opened in the 1760s, is widely regarded as the start of Britain's canal age. The M60 motorway now encloses the wider city in a full orbital ring.
A Manchester map poster shows how much history sits in the tight city-centre grid. The Northern Quarter's close street pattern, the curve of the Mancunian Way, the Irwell's meanders toward Salford Quays and the dark lines of the canals all appear together. Framed wider, the docks at Salford Quays and the ring of the M60 give the print a clear outer edge.

River Irwell
The river winds between Manchester and Salford before opening into the broad docks of Salford Quays, giving the poster a strong curving line on its western side.
Northern Quarter grid
A tight pattern of narrow streets just north of Piccadilly, once warehouses and now shops and studios. It shows as a fine texture close to the centre.

Zakaj Manchester
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
Manchester inspires loyalty, whether to a neighbourhood, a university, a football club or simply the place you grew up. A clean map says that without logos or slogans, and it looks at home in a flat or an office.
Personalise the title, add a subtitle such as a district or date, and set the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits the brick-and-canal character especially well.
