Manukau City was once a separate local authority covering much of southern and eastern Auckland, before it was merged into a single Auckland Council in 2010. The name still marks the area around the Manukau city centre and the large suburban districts around it, spread across land between the Manukau Harbour and the waters of the Hauraki Gulf.
On a map, the area is defined by water: the wide, shallow Manukau Harbour with its mudflats and inlets on the west, and the Tāmaki estuary and gulf coast to the east. Between them run the Southern Motorway and rail lines, with curving suburban streets and cul-de-sacs typical of later twentieth-century New Zealand planning.
