Maplewood is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, about half an hour by train from Manhattan. On a map, it is almost entirely residential, but the street pattern is far from uniform. Straight blocks near the railway give way to curving, tree-lined roads that follow the gentle rise of the land toward the west.
The heart of the township is Maplewood Village, a small commercial district next to the train station on the line into New York. Just beside it, Memorial Park opens up as a large green space. Along the western edge, South Mountain Reservation spreads out as a broad wooded area of trails and ridges shared with neighbouring towns.
