Marigot is the main town of the French side of Saint Martin, an island shared with the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten. From above, the town sits on a narrow band of land between Marigot Bay, which opens to the sea, and Simpson Bay Lagoon, a large enclosed body of water behind it. Streets fill the space between the two, with a marina cut into the lagoon side.
On a hill overlooking the town stands Fort Louis, built in the late eighteenth century to protect the harbour and its warehouses. From the fort's position the map makes clear why the site mattered: it looks over both the bay and the lagoon. The island itself has been divided between France and the Netherlands since the seventeenth century, with no fixed barrier on the border.
A Marigot map poster is framed by water on two sides. The open bay curves along one edge, the lagoon fills the other, and the town's streets form a compact band between them. Roads leading towards the Dutch side and other parts of the island stretch out from the centre and give the print a sense of connection.
