Maryville is the county seat of Blount County, in East Tennessee, south of Knoxville. From above, the town has a compact historic centre around the courthouse, with streets spreading outward over rolling ground. Pistol Creek winds through the town, and a greenway follows it, giving the map a green, curving thread among the streets.
Maryville College, founded in 1819, is one of the oldest colleges in the South, and its wooded campus appears as a large open area next to the centre. The town adjoins Alcoa to the north, and McGhee Tyson Airport lies nearby. To the southeast, the foothills rise toward the Great Smoky Mountains.
