Mineola is a village in Nassau County, on the flat ground of central Long Island. It is the county seat, and the courthouses and county offices sit in a civic district near the centre. On a map, the village is almost entirely built up. Short residential streets form a tight grid, and bands of commercial blocks run along the main roads.
The Long Island Rail Road is the strongest line through the village. Mineola station is on the Main Line and is where the Oyster Bay Branch splits off, so tracks leave in more than one direction. The village is also home to a major hospital, NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island. Because it is so compact, the edges of the village run straight into neighbouring communities with no gap in the street pattern.
