Mishōhirajō is on the far southwestern coast of Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, facing the Bungo Channel and the Uwa Sea. The coastline here is a ria coast, cut into long inlets and sheltered bays by drowned valleys, with steep, forested hills rising straight from the water.
The settlement occupies one of the few flat areas in this terrain: a narrow strip of land by a harbour at the head of a bay. Streets are short and tightly packed between the shore and the hills. Roads follow the coastline through tunnels and along cliffs to reach the neighbouring coves. The bays are widely used for fish and pearl farming, and aquaculture rafts are a familiar sight on the water.
