Motril is the main town on Granada's Costa Tropical, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean. On a map the old centre forms a dense knot of streets on rising ground. For centuries the plain around Motril was planted with sugar cane, and the town was one of Europe's centres of sugar production. Its old mills and a museum still record that history. The port handles trade and ferry routes to North Africa.
