Muthupet is a town in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, near the southern edge of the Cauvery delta. On the map the town is a modest pattern of streets and markets, but the real subject lies just to the south. There a broad lagoon and a maze of tidal channels open toward the Palk Strait.
The Muthupet mangroves are among the most extensive on the Tamil Nadu coast: a protected wetland threaded with creeks where branches of the delta reach the sea. The area is also known for the migratory birds that arrive in winter. From above, the mangroves and water form an intricate, branching pattern, strikingly different from the irrigation channels and field boundaries to the north.
