Narnaul is the administrative centre of Mahendragarh district in southern Haryana, close to the border with Rajasthan. The landscape here is dry and open, with outlying ridges of the Aravalli range rising from the plain. On a map the old town appears as a dense, irregular web of lanes, surrounded by later colonies laid out in straighter lines along the main roads.
The town has a long history and a notable group of monuments from the Sur and Mughal periods, including the tomb of Ibrahim Khan Sur, grandfather of Sher Shah Suri, and the Jal Mahal, a pavilion built in the middle of a large tank. Birbal's Chhatta, a multi-storey mansion associated with Akbar's courtier, is another well-known landmark.
