Pechora channels
The river splits into several arms around the town, separated by long sandy islands, so broad bands of water cross the poster rather than streets.

Nar'yan-Mar Map Poster & Print
Nar'yan-Mar is the administrative centre of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. It stands on the right bank of the Pechora River north of the Arctic Circle, not far from where the river spreads into its delta before reaching the Barents Sea. On a map, water dominates: wide channels, sandbars and low islands surround a town built on a small patch of firm ground.
The name means Red Town in the Nenets language, and the settlement grew in the 1930s as a river port for timber and supplies. No road links it to the rest of Russia all year round, so the Pechora and the airport remain its main connections. The map shows that isolation, with streets that simply stop at the edge of the tundra.
A Nar'yan-Mar map poster is an unusual object: mostly river and open ground, with a compact grid of streets and the port pressed against the water. The braided channels make a striking abstract image in black and white, and they carry the particular feeling of a northern outpost at the edge of the continent.

Port on the bank
Quays and the river port line the waterfront. They are the reason the town was founded, and they give the edge of the built area its firm, straight line.
Tundra edge
Beyond the last blocks the land opens into the lakes and wetland of the far north, a scattered pattern of small water bodies that fills the margins of the map.
