Tidal flats
Broad mudflats around the island are exposed at low tide. Winding channels cross them in patterns that look almost like tree branches.

Neuwerk Map Poster & Print
Neuwerk lies in the Wadden Sea off Cuxhaven, at the mouth of the Elbe, and is part of the city of Hamburg. The island is small, low and roughly rounded, protected by a dike. From above, the tidal flats around it are more striking than the island itself. At low tide they stretch to the mainland, cut by winding channels that fill again when the water returns.
At low tide people can reach Neuwerk on foot or by horse-drawn carriage across the mudflats from Cuxhaven, a crossing that has been made for a long time. The island's old lighthouse tower dates from the fourteenth century and is considered the oldest building in Hamburg.
A Neuwerk map poster places the island as a small shape among wide tidal patterns. The channels draw branching lines on the flats, and the island's paths and farm buildings are few. It is a map of shifting water more than of streets.
