Nizāmābād lies in northern Telangana, on the Deccan plateau between Hyderabad and the Maharashtra border. On the map, it is a compact city whose older quarters cluster around the historic fort, with newer neighbourhoods spreading outward along main roads. Railway lines pass through the city, and the surrounding plain is dotted with tanks, the traditional reservoirs of the region.
The city was historically known as Indur and was renamed after the Nizam of Hyderabad in the early twentieth century.
