Okrika sits on an island in the tidal waterways south of Port Harcourt, and on a map there is far more water around it than land. Creeks and river channels curl around the island and branch into narrower inlets that disappear into mangrove. The Okrika people belong to the wider Ijaw community of the Niger Delta and have a long history of fishing and trade on these waterways.
