The ring road
One road circles the entire island along the shoreline. On the map it forms a continuous loop, the clearest single line in the composition.

Orchid Island Map Poster & Print
Orchid Island, known in Chinese as Lanyu, lies off the southeast coast of Taiwan in the Pacific. It is volcanic, with steep, green mountains rising from a narrow coastal strip. From above, the island is compact and slightly irregular. A single ring road follows the shoreline all the way around, and there is very little development in the interior.
The island is home to the Tao people, also called the Yami. They are known for their carved and painted wooden plank boats and for traditions linked to the flying fish season. Their villages sit along the coast, some with traditional semi-underground houses built to withstand typhoons. The island is also home to a nuclear waste storage facility, which has long been a source of local controversy.
An Orchid Island map poster shows a clear, rounded composition. The ring road hugs the coast and small villages are spaced around it, while the interior remains open where the mountains rise. Headlands and small coves give the coastline texture. It is a simple, strong shape that translates cleanly into black and white.

Coastal villages
The island's Tao villages are spaced around the coast, each a small cluster of lanes along the ring road. They give the outline its few points of density.
Mountain centre
Steep, forested mountains fill the interior with almost no roads. That leaves a wide open space in the middle of the island, framed by the coastal ring.
