Orpington lies in the London Borough of Bromley, close to where the capital gives way to the Kent countryside. From above it looks like a classic outer-London town. The high street runs north to south, and the railway line and station sit to one side. Curving interwar and post-war estates fill the space between, and green belt fields and woodland press in at the edges.
The River Cray rises close to the town centre, among the ponds of Priory Gardens beside the old priory building, and flows north from there. Orpington is also known far beyond London for the Orpington chicken breed, which was developed here in the late nineteenth century. Fast trains to central London made the town a commuter hub, and the street pattern shows that.
