Ouahigouya is the capital of the Nord region of Burkina Faso, in the Sahel country north-west of Ouagadougou. From above, the city spreads widely across the flat plain. Long straight roads cross each other, and between them lie low-density neighbourhoods of family compounds, where streets often run in regular lines.
The city was the historic capital of the Yatenga kingdom, one of the Mossi states that ruled large parts of what is now Burkina Faso. Today it is the main administrative and market center of the north, with roads leading towards Ouagadougou, Mali and the surrounding towns.
