Paithan is a town in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, formerly Aurangabad district, on the north bank of the Godavari River. From above, the old town appears as a dense cluster of lanes near the riverbank, with ghats descending to the water. Just upstream, the Jayakwadi Dam holds back Nath Sagar, one of the largest reservoirs in the state.
Paithan has a long history. As Pratishthana, it served as a capital of the Satavahana dynasty around two thousand years ago. It is revered as the home of the saint Eknath, whose samadhi draws pilgrims, and it gives its name to the Paithani sari, a silk weave known for its peacock and lotus motifs and richly patterned borders.
