Pishin stands on a wide upland plain north of Quetta, in the part of Balochistan that runs toward the Afghan border. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets where the main roads meet. Walled orchards and fields spread out from it in rectangles, and beyond them the plain rises to dry ridges drawn with sharp, bare contours.
The district is known for fruit: apples, grapes and apricots grow in gardens that have long relied on careful irrigation, including traditional underground channels called karez. On a map this shows as a patchwork of plots around the town, with long straight boundaries running out toward open ground. The contrast between cultivated land and empty upland is the strongest thing in the composition.
