Pithampur lies in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, south-west of Indore, on the flat black-soil country of the Malwa plateau. Its map is unusual for an Indian town of its size. Instead of a dense old centre, it is dominated by large rectangular industrial plots divided by wide, straight roads.
