DuPage River corridor
The river winds from north to south through the village, bordered by parks and wooded banks. Together they form a continuous pale band across an otherwise built-up plan.

Plainfield Map Poster & Print
Plainfield lies in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago, mostly in Will County, where the DuPage River cuts a shallow green corridor through flat prairie land. Its downtown is small and orderly, a few blocks of straight streets near the river crossing. Beyond it the map changes character completely. Looping residential drives, cul-de-sacs and retention ponds fill what were farm fields only a few decades ago.
The village is considered the oldest community in Will County. It was settled in the early nineteenth century, and the historic Lincoln Highway runs through its centre. Plainfield is also remembered for the powerful tornado of August 1990, which badly damaged the high school and the neighbourhoods around it. Since then the village has grown several times over and is now one of the larger communities in the area.
A Plainfield map poster shows two eras of planning side by side. The old grid near the river is dense and rectilinear, while the newer neighbourhoods unfold in soft curves and loops that look almost ornamental in black and white. Section-line roads cut straight through everything and give the composition a quiet structure that is typical of the Illinois prairie.

Lincoln Highway downtown
The historic coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway passes through the old centre, where a short grid of streets marks the original village near the river crossing.
Curving subdivisions
Much of the map is filled by newer neighbourhoods of looping streets, cul-de-sacs and small ponds. In monochrome these patterns turn into intricate linework.
