Ponta Grossa sits on the Campos Gerais, a high plateau of natural grassland in the state of Paraná, and its nickname, Princesa dos Campos, reflects that setting. The city is built over a series of rounded hills, so its streets bend and change direction often. Small grids are fitted to each slope rather than to a single regular plan.
