Pudupattanam is a town in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu, on the Coromandel Coast south of Chennai. It lies close to Kalpakkam, the site of a major nuclear research centre, and the two form a small cluster of settlement along the shore. On the map, the long, gently curving coastline defines the eastern edge, with sandy beach running unbroken for kilometres.
Behind the beach, the land is flat and threaded with lagoons, creeks and the Buckingham Canal, a navigation channel built along this coast in the nineteenth century. The East Coast Road runs parallel to the shore, and village lanes connect it to the waterfront in short perpendicular strokes, a pattern that reads clearly in black and white.
