Qingyuan lies in central Guangdong, north of Guangzhou, where the Bei River leaves the northern mountains and reaches the edge of the Pearl River Delta plain. The river bends through the city in broad curves. The urban area has grown along both banks, which a series of bridges joins together.
Around the city the terrain rises into green hills, and the wider municipality stretches north into mountainous country. Qingyuan is known in the region for its hot springs, its riverside scenery and its local chicken breed. Its closeness to Guangzhou has brought new residential development along the roads leading south.
