The name means head of the water in Arabic, a reference to springs, and in this part of Morocco water has always shaped where people settle. From above, the settlement appears as a cluster of streets and compounds set among farmland.
The Saïs plain between Fès and Meknès is one of Morocco's agricultural heartlands. Olive groves, cereals and orchards cover much of it, with the Middle Atlas rising to the south. Roads cross the plain in long, straight lines, and settlements like Ras el Ma sit along them. Their growth is recorded in newer blocks added to older cores.
