Riccione stretches along the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna, just south of Rimini, and its map is organised by the sea. A continuous sandy shoreline runs northwest to southeast, and behind it the town forms a band of streets laid out roughly parallel and perpendicular to the beach, with the railway line and the old coastal road tracing further lines inland.
The town earned the nickname Perla Verde dell'Adriatico, the green pearl of the Adriatic, for its gardens and tree-lined avenues. Viale Ceccarini, its best-known street, runs from the inland districts towards the sea and has long been the place for evening walks and shopping. Inland, the ground lifts into low hills where the Aquafan water park and villas look back over the coast.
